I just wanted to have some mid-week fun with you guys! I am a HUGE music lover. So, I thought I’d take a break from the heavy stuff and share 20 of my favorite songs, with a little explanation about why they made the list. It was super hard to choose the first 20! I’ll definitely be doing this again.
Please share some of your favorites with me in the comments!
20. “I Want It That Way” by Backstreet Boys – If you have known me for more than a few years, you know how obsessed I was with the Backstreet Boys. AJ McLean and I were supposed to be married and living happily ever after right now. The lyrics to this song make absolutely no sense, but for some reason, it just hits. I can never resist turning it up to max volume in the car to get that feeling of nostalgia.
19. “He Is” by Brandy – This song is vocal perfection from start to finish. Brandy is one of the most underrated vocalists of our time. This song is so sexy, and it is what we all hope to feel about our man.
18. “This Day, This Minute, Right Now” by Mint Condition – Can we talk about how incredible Mint Condition is? I am obsessed! And this song is one of my absolute favorites by them. The instrumentation and Stokley’s vocals are so perfect. If one of y’all men ever get lucky enough to marry me, this song is a must-play!
17. “My Life Is In Your Hands” by God’s Property – I heard this song as a child but found it again randomly during adulthood while I was going through a rough time. I was scrolling a playlist and decided to listen. I remember completely breaking down in my car while it was playing. This is one of my go-to songs when I need comfort.
16. “Anytime” by Brian McKnight – If you don’t want to start missing folks you don’t even really like, don’t listen to this song! I always get a little misty when this song plays, whether I miss someone or not. Brian is one of those artists that can always get me to feel.
15. “You and I” by Stevie Wonder – I am a huge Stevie Wonder fan, and this is one of my favorites. It is so simplistic yet powerful. Stevie Wonder can tell a story with lyrics better than anyone.
14. “Love Shoulda Brought You Home” by Toni Braxton – Okay, whether I’m single or not, this song gets me emotional! It has sort of a Waiting to Exhale type of effect. You just suddenly hate all men after listening. Toni is a brilliant vocalist and is in my top 10, for sure. She delivered on this track! Boomerang is one of my favorite movies and has one of the best soundtracks ever!
13. “Freak Like Me” by Adina Howard – Anytime I get into the car with my BFF, we must listen to this song. (Shoutout to Evalani!). This one is self-explanatory. Moving on…
12. “No Time” by Lil Kim – This is how I live my life. “Got no time for fake niggas!” and I mean that.
11. “Rather Be” by HER – I absolutely love HER. This song is a total eargasm and gives me all the feels.
10. “Shake That Monkey“ by Too Short feat Lil Jon and the Eastside Boys – Okay, so, don’t play this around me because I literally cannot resist it. If a song is telling me to shake something, I feel like I need to do that. When I used to go out with my girls, this one always got me on the floor!
9. “Concentrate” by Lucky Daye – I ran across Lucky Daye by chance on somebody else’s playlist on Amazon in 2019. I fell in love! I don’t know how many times I’ve played this song. And do yourself a favor and check out the live version! So dope!
8. “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” by Kanye West – This song never fails to get me hyped up! This was Kanye before he was sleeping in folk’s stadiums, levitating, and wearing stocking caps for masks. This was the Kanye that made us feel like we could take over the world. I play this song on the way to work, job interviews, and anything involving a bag.
7. “Say Yes”- Floetry – This song is the epitome of sexy. If this doesn’t make you feel something about somebody, you have no soul. Neo-soul perfection!
6. “Any Time, Any Place” by Janet Jackson – All I’m going to say is… I agree, Janet, I agree.
5. “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child – My sister and I have been singing this song together forever! We even practiced the harmonies and all the dance routines. It brings back so many memories for me. And we don’t even need to mention how I’m sure most of us can relate to the lyrics.
4. “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce – If I hear this, I automatically start runway walking! You just can’t listen to this without the walk! And we have to talk about the horns in this song! Rich Harrison is a bad boy. Beyonce is the Queen and needs no explanation. Currently doing the “Uh Oh” dance as I type this!
3. “If Only You Knew” by Patti LaBelle – I have loved this song my whole life. Patti is one of my favorite vocalists. These lyrics have resonated with me a time or two in life. And can we just stop and talk about those notes at the end?! So amazing!
2. “Back That Ass Up” by Juvenile – This song literally needs no explanation! This is like a black national anthem. When this comes on, your ass just automatically starts shaking. All I need to hear is those first few notes, and it’s over!
1. “Sweet Love” by Anita Baker – Auntie Anita is the truth! This is probably one of the most played songs on my playlist ever. Her voice is so euphoric and angelic. You can never go wrong with Anita.
Great pics, so many great songs out there. We have a big age difference but I’d add Reasons-Earth Wind and Fire, Luther Vandross, Whitney, Sam Cooke. Aretha .
"Tell me whyyyyy!" Okay that's it, I'm gone! LOL!
Love me some Brian McKnight! You lost me with Back Street Boys though🙃 My favorite song of all time is ”I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston.
Ooo I have to mention Anytime- gorgeous song, I’ve loved it since I was really young!!
Ok so I LOVE HER and Stevie!!! I never heard of Mint Condition and yes those are minty delicious! Any Time Any Place is on my XXX playlist 😈 and Back That Ass Up makes me do exactly that when I hear it no matter where Im at lol! Underwhelmed by Ye’s song which if I’m underwhelmed by him it’s different from the usual lol! love the mix :)
